What Is the Infinity Symbol?

The infinity symbol ∞ (U+221E) was introduced by the English mathematician John Wallis in 1655 to represent something without end. Today it means far more than maths: eternal love, lifelong friendship, endless possibilities and loyalty. That is why it is one of the most popular symbols for tattoos, couple bios and anniversary messages.

Unicode has several versions:

For a tattoo, you can type the words you want next to ∞ in our font generators and preview them in different styles before visiting the artist. Keep in mind that ∞ follows your font, while ♾️ always looks like the emoji style of the viewer’s phone, so the text version is better for designs that need a consistent look.

The Infinity Symbol in Maths and Science

In mathematics ∞ is not a number you can calculate with in the normal way. It describes a quantity that grows without limit. You will see it in limits (for example, the limit of 1/x as x approaches ∞ is 0), in intervals such as [0, ∞), and in sums of infinite series. Physicists and engineers use it for quantities that are too large to matter, and photographers see it on lens focus rings to mark focus at a great distance.

Related symbols include ℵ₀ (aleph-null), used for the size of the set of natural numbers, and ⧜, which marks an “incomplete infinity” in some notations. If you are writing equations, you can find many of these in our math symbols collection.

The figure-eight shape is also known as a lemniscate, from the Latin word for a ribbon, which is why the infinity symbol pairs so naturally with hearts and ribbons in jewellery and tattoo designs.
