The Definitive Guide to Japanese Kaomoji (顔文字) & Emoticons
Before standard color emojis were encoded into iOS, Android, and Unicode, digital communicators in Japan developed Kaomoji (顔文字), a sophisticated system of expressive text faces made from Katakana, Hiragana, Cyrillic, Greek, and typographical symbols. The word kaomoji combines kao (顔, meaning face) and moji (文字, meaning character).
How Kaomoji Differ from Western Emoticons
Western emoticons (such as :-) or :-() were designed by computer scientist Scott Fahlman at Carnegie Mellon in 1982. They require the reader to tilt their head 90 degrees to the left to see the face, and they focus almost entirely on the mouth shape (smile vs. frown).
In contrast, Japanese cultural psychology emphasizes the eyes when reading emotional honesty, as reflected in the Japanese proverb "The eyes say more than the mouth" (目は口ほどに物を言う). Consequently:
- Kaomoji are horizontal and upright: You read them naturally without tilting your head:

How to Type Kaomoji Without Leaving Your Keyboard
Both Windows and iOS have secret built-in kaomoji libraries:
Press Win + . (Period), then click the (^_^) icon on the top tab row. You will see organized tabs for Happy, Greeting, Acting Cute, Sad, Angry, and Surprised!
Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Add New Keyboard > Japanese > Romaji. In any app, switch to Japanese, tap 123, and press the ^.^ key to reveal dozens of Japanese faces.
